The 40 Days for Life vigil kicked off with a meeting September 27 and talk by a local pro-lifer who was instrumental in the eventual defeat of the abortion plans at the Madison Surgery Center.

It is possible to change minds and hearts on abortion
A young woman walked through the first set of doors at Madison’s Planned Parenthood clinic to register. However, she kept looking back at a person praying on the sidewalk outside the building.
Minutes later, she walked out of Planned Parenthood without ever entering the waiting room, smiling as she left the parking lot in a red truck.
Laura Karlen of Madison’s new initiative, 365 Days for Life, reported this news on the very first day of the new program. Karlen believes a baby was saved that day, promising great things ahead through this new initiative.
UW officially drops second-trimester abortion plan
MADISON — UW Health released a statement December 13 confirming that the Madison Surgery Center (MSC) will not be involved in second-trimester abortions.
“UW’s statement validates what we have suspected for a year,” Peggy Hamill, state director of Pro-Life Wisconsin, said in a press release December 13. “As 2010 draws to a close, we thank God for concluding this horrifying chapter in the ongoing struggle with UW’s commitment to abortion.”
Since the abortion plan was revealed in January 2009, pro-life organizations in the area have organized prayer vigils, rallies, petitions, and boycotts.
Late-term abortion plan at site is dropped, but questions remain
MADISON — Despite news that the plans were dropped for the Madison Surgery Center (MSC) to begin offering late-term abortions, questions remain after a statement from UW Health was released May 5. The statement said that the organization remains committed to including late-term abortion among its reproductive health services.
Pro-life groups, however, have seen this recent development as positive. They hope the decision not to perform abortions at the Madison Surgery Center indicates that the second-trimester abortion services would not be offered in Madison.
“The leadership of the Madison Surgery Center is to be commended, if reports from the State of Wisconsin and local media outlets are true,” the Diocese of Madison wrote in a press release May 6. “Whether the decision to forego destroying innocent lives, through late-term abortions, was made by examining their own consciences, whether it is because people of good will in the community (including MSC staff members) persistently and peacefully voiced their objections, or whether it is a product of prayer, this is the right decision.”
Endangered species?
One definition of an endangered species is “a population of organisms which is at risk of becoming extinct because it is either few in numbers, or threatened by changing environmental or predation parameters.”
We usually don’t think about people as an endangered species. In fact, we seem to hear more about overpopulation than whether we have enough human beings in the world.
Pro-lifers celebrate news abortion plan is dropped, questions remain
Editor’s note: Updated to include new information from UW Health.
MADISON — Pro-life groups are claiming victory following the announcement that plans have been dropped to perform abortions at the Madison Surgery Center (MSC).
According to a letter from Kevin Potter, assistant attorney general for the State of Wisconsin, to an attorney in Eau Claire, released by Pro-Life Wisconsin and dated April 30, the University of Wisconsin has abandoned plans to provide late-term abortion services at the MSC.
However, a statement from UW Health has contradicted reports.
“There are reports in today’s media that UW Health has abandoned its plans to provide second trimester pregnancy terminations. This is not true,” UW Health Marketing and Public Affairs said in a statement released May 5.
Pro-life persistence does pay off
Mother Teresa has been quoted as saying, “I do not pray for success; I pray for faithfulness.” Many people in the pro-life movement haven’t seen much success in the past 37 years, but they have continued to be faithful in fighting for the lives of unborn babies.
The January 22, 1973 Supreme Court decision in Roe vs. Wade which legalized abortion set in motion a fierce debate in this country. The court decision has not been overturned, but there are signs of hope as we begin the year 2010.
Don’t use tax and tuition money to fund abortions
To my elected state officials:
It appears that the regents of the University of Wisconsin have approved using UW medical facilities to perform second-trimester abortions. That means they are using the tax dollars and tuition moneys of persons very much opposed to such acts of child abuse and murder.
Board approves abortion proposal in Madison
MADISON — The UW Hospitals and Clinics (UWHC) Authority Board approved a proposal February 4 to begin performing abortions at the Madison Surgery Center (MSC).
Pro-lifers submit 20,000-plus petitions
More than 20,000 signatures were presented at a press conference at the state capitol building January 27 to protest a plan to begin performing second-trimester abortions at the Madison Surgery Center.
