BARABOO — At 7:30 a.m. on September 25, the Carillon bells rang at Durward’s Glen Retreat Center in the Baraboo River Valley, greeting pilgrims as they arrived to attend this year’s annual Fall Faith and Family Marian Conference, “Do Whatever He Tells You.”
Our Lady from the newly built, “Mary, Mother of God Grotto,” seemed to come alive as she stood watching over her guests as they entered the Immaculate Conception Chapel at the base of the hill. Clearly, those who rose early, realizing the importance of not missing Confession before Mass, chose to respond to her call for this special day.
Greeters for this special occasion presented booths on the front porch. They were Nancy Chenery, a spokesperson from Miles Christi; Joe and Vonnie Clemens, volunteers for registration; and Rose Ann Blau, a Durward’s Glen historian.
Displayed nearby, a large picture of the Virgin Mary by Charles Durward and titled, “Madonna of the Embrace,” welcomed guests as they climbed the steps to the retreat center.
Get educated on the Catholic faith

Local men sponsor six seminarians at World Youth Day
The ways in which we act out our Christian charity in the Church, for the love of God and neighbor, is evident in a number of ways throughout a given year.
Often it is through volunteering at our parishes or parish-related projects — things we feel attached to and with which we want to assist in a specific way. Other times it is through monetary donations to similar local campaigns, projects, or funds, benefiting things that we know, in faith, we need to support. Always, it includes our prayers!
Importance of the communion of saints
What a great feast day we celebrated on Sunday, a feast that calls us to focus on one of the phrases in the Creed over which we might grow accustomed to pass too quickly. We say at the end of the creed, “I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints…”
We’re all called to proclaim the Word
Every Catholic has a call to teach, proclaim the Word of God, and pass along the faith to future generations. We are reminded of that call as we celebrate Catechetical Sunday this weekend on Sunday, Sept. 20, in our parishes and homes.
This year focuses on the theme, “Catechesis and the Proclamation of the Word.” In many parishes, those who serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. We thank all people who step forward to serve as catechists in our parishes, teaching everyone from pre-schoolers to adults.
