BARABOO — An Advent Festival of Seven Lessons and Carols will be held on Sunday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph Church 304 East St., Baraboo
The Advent Festival is an ecumenical celebration of the season of Advent. It is an opportunity to help prepare for the coming of our Lord and Savior on Christmas.
This is an invitation to come and pray the prophetic promises of salvation, using the ancient “O Antiphons.” These have been sung, with the Canticle of Mary, since the sixth century. Each of the seven “O Antiphons” highlights a title for the Messiah taken from the Hebrew Scriptures: Wisdom, Adonai, Root of Jesse, Key of David, Dayspring, King of Nations, and Emmanuel.
These seven titles form the basis of the popular hymn, “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.”
Advent provides space and time to treasure anew the physical birth of the Savior into the world of humans. The media and commerce command our attention through commercialism, noise, and glitter, when the real reason for the season requires calm and quiet.
By stepping apart, one may find His presence with us now in word and sacrament, and recall His promise to be with us into eternity.
