MADISON — Catholic young adults in the Diocese of Madison rejoice at the coming of summer for many reasons.
One of them is the Young Adult Sports League, held every Monday night on the athletic fields at Holy Name Heights in Madison.
The league rotates sports throughout the summer, alternating between ultimate Frisbee, soccer, flag football, kickball, and softball.
This lends variety and interest, but there’s still a healthy level of competition.
The teams stay the same throughout the summer, and the overall victors win undying glory (or at least bragging rights till the next year).
The format lends itself to ease of use: Teams are big enough that the inevitable absences of players don’t disturb play, but there are plenty of teams to create competition.
There are around 175 people involved in total, but each team only strictly needs to be present for its own games, giving young adults the flexibility they need in their schedules.
Nonetheless, many young adults stick around to watch the other teams play.
The environment on Monday nights is pure summer. Some people have brought picnic blankets or lawn chairs and the occasional newborn baby makes an appearance on the sidelines as young spouses trade off playing and caring for the baby.
The low air quality on June 26 resulted in more time-outs and shorter halves, but the games went on!
The easygoing summer vibe continues after the games.
The league is sponsored by Draft House, a bar and restaurant in Verona, and many nights teams gather there afterward for discounted food and drinks.
There are also T-shirts to be had so each team can wear its color proudly.
The friendly league is always welcoming new players. Young adults around the diocese are encouraged to get involved and be part of the community.
There couldn’t be a better way to spend a summer evening.
