MADISON — Cantors, organists, and pianists throughout the Diocese of Madison are invited to attend “Singing the Mass,” a workshop from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, Sept. 21, at Holy Name Oratory, 702 S. High Point Rd., Madison.
Fellowship begins at 8:30 a.m., followed by Morning Prayer at 9 a.m.
Fr. Andrew Showers, director of the Diocese of Madison Office of Worship, will give the keynote address, followed by breakout sessions and a roundtable discussion.
Topics for organists and pianists include: Hymn and service music playing, accompanying cantors and soloists, beginning and intermediate organ repertoire, and beginning improvisation.
Participants should bring their choice of the following: Hymn, short piece of organ music, or a short prepared improvisation.
Topics for cantors include: Role of the cantor, healthy vocal technique, gestures, diction, and proper microphone use.
Participants should bring: A responsorial psalm for Mass, a chant proper, or a sacred music solo.
Those who attend may either observe or participate.
Pianists who have not had organ instruction are most welcome to participate.
