Vicariate Councils of Catholic Women focus on mercy
Mercy will be the focus at the fall meetings of the West Dane, Sauk, and Columbia North Vicariate Councils of Catholic Women (CCW).
Affiliated with the Madison Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (MDCCW), the regional councils provide an opportunity for prayer, service, and fellowship. MDCCW Co-Presidents Sue Koch and Ellen Martin will participate in the meetings. All women are invited to attend.
Paper should have given more space to article on St. Mary Magdalene feast day
To the editor:
In the June 16 issue of the Catholic Herald, you give four of the five columns on Page 5 to “Celebrating Women.” As the father of six daughters (and two sons), I applaud that.
However, on Page 23, you give two column inches in column five to the story, “Pope elevates memorial of St. Mary Magdalene to feast day.”
In my not-so-humble 90-year-old opinion, this story should be on the front page!

Downloadable from the Madison Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (MDCCW) website (www.mdccw.com/pdfs/new_evangelization.pdf), the program can be used throughout the year and includes ideas for religious holidays and family gatherings.
A Mother’s Day gift: paid maternity leave
Did you know that women are the sole breadwinners in nearly half of U.S. households?
Yet, when women give birth to a baby, 88 percent of them are paid nothing in the weeks they take off after having a child.
These statistics were reported in an article by Cindy Goodman in the Miami Herald entitled, “Best Mother’s Day gift: paid maternity leave.”
As we approach Mother’s Day on May 8, it’s a time to thank and celebrate all mothers who gave us the gift of life.
In this month of mothers
On May 8 we celebrate Mother’s Day, and as Catholics we dedicate the whole month to our heavenly mother, Mary.
And so, May is a natural time to reflect on the irreplaceable role of mothers and all women in our lives.
Prophetic words
In the weeks following our appearance at the Supreme Court, several women who write about Catholic spirituality mentioned prophetic words of Blessed Paul VI to women in reference to our case — words uttered over 50 years ago, but which are, perhaps, more relevant today than ever.
“At this moment when the human race is undergoing so deep a transformation, women impregnated with the spirit of the Gospel can do so much to aid mankind in not falling,” Paul VI said at the conclusion of the Second Vatican Council.
He continued with this urgent plea: “Women of the entire universe, whether Christian or non-believing, you to whom life is entrusted at this grave moment in history, it is for you to save the peace of the world.”
