Late-term abortion plan at site is dropped, but questions remain
MADISON — Despite news that the plans were dropped for the Madison Surgery Center (MSC) to begin offering late-term abortions, questions remain after a statement from UW Health was released May 5. The statement said that the organization remains committed to including late-term abortion among its reproductive health services.
Pro-life groups, however, have seen this recent development as positive. They hope the decision not to perform abortions at the Madison Surgery Center indicates that the second-trimester abortion services would not be offered in Madison.
“The leadership of the Madison Surgery Center is to be commended, if reports from the State of Wisconsin and local media outlets are true,” the Diocese of Madison wrote in a press release May 6. “Whether the decision to forego destroying innocent lives, through late-term abortions, was made by examining their own consciences, whether it is because people of good will in the community (including MSC staff members) persistently and peacefully voiced their objections, or whether it is a product of prayer, this is the right decision.”
Endangered species?
One definition of an endangered species is “a population of organisms which is at risk of becoming extinct because it is either few in numbers, or threatened by changing environmental or predation parameters.”
We usually don’t think about people as an endangered species. In fact, we seem to hear more about overpopulation than whether we have enough human beings in the world.
Pro-lifers celebrate news abortion plan is dropped, questions remain
Editor’s note: Updated to include new information from UW Health.
MADISON — Pro-life groups are claiming victory following the announcement that plans have been dropped to perform abortions at the Madison Surgery Center (MSC).
According to a letter from Kevin Potter, assistant attorney general for the State of Wisconsin, to an attorney in Eau Claire, released by Pro-Life Wisconsin and dated April 30, the University of Wisconsin has abandoned plans to provide late-term abortion services at the MSC.
However, a statement from UW Health has contradicted reports.
“There are reports in today’s media that UW Health has abandoned its plans to provide second trimester pregnancy terminations. This is not true,” UW Health Marketing and Public Affairs said in a statement released May 5.
