Diocese encourages collection for hurricane relief
MADISON — The Diocese of Madison has encouraged parishes, at the discretion of the pastor, to take up a special collection beginning the weekend of October 29 for the relief of Hurricane Matthew victims in the United States and Caribbean countries, especially in Haiti.
“There is no requirement from the Diocese of Madison that a parish perform a special collection for Hurricane Matthew victims, although it is generally encouraged, per the discretion of the pastor, as a Corporal Work of Mercy during the Jubilee Year of Mercy,” said Vicar General Msgr. James Bartylla.
40 Days for Life UNITED tour holds statewide rally
MADISON — The 40 Days for Life UNITED tour bus will be coming to Madison for a statewide rally on Thursday, Oct. 13.
The rally will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. outside the Planned Parenthood facility at 3706 Orin Rd.
Churches Center celebrates 25 years
MONROE — A harvest celebration will be held on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 3 until 8 p.m. at St. John United Church of Christ, 1724 14th St.
The public is invited to this event celebrating 25 years of the Churches Center for Land and People serving local farmers, food enthusiasts, and the local food economy.
Pope Francis speaks truth to power
As the first pope in history to address a joint session of Congress, Pope Francis defended the human right of masses of oppressed and poor people to immigrate.
He said “We must not be taken aback by their number, but rather view them as persons, seeing their faces and listening to their stories, trying to respond as best we can to their situation.”
Living by the Golden Rule
The pope said, “We need to avoid a common temptation nowadays: to discard whatever proves troublesome. Let us remember the Golden Rule: ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you'” (Mt 7:12).
Philharmonic Chorus of Madison concerts
MADISON — The Philharmonic Chorus of Madison will perform free concerts on Wednesday, April 29, 7 p.m., at Oakwood West; Friday, May 1, 7:30 p.m., at Monona United Methodist Church; and Sunday, May 3, 2 p.m., at Bethany United Methodist Church.
The chorus, under the direction of Patrick Gorman, will perform Aaron Copland’s In the Beginning with soloist Shannon O’Brien-Kaszuba.
Considered the Dean of American Music, Copland composed the choral work in 1947, setting 38 verses from the Book of Genesis.
Catholics at Capitol to emphasize united Church
On the Wednesday after Easter, April 8, Catholics from around the state will meet at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center in Madison for Catholics at the Capitol 2015.

Public invited to pray for peace at Sinsinawa Mound
SINSINAWA — The public is invited to join the Sinsinawa Mound community in prayer for peace in our world and in our hearts at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 22.
The service is being held in conjunction with the International Day of Peace established by a United Nations resolution in 1981. This year’s International Day of Peace theme recognizes the 30th United Nations General Assembly Declaration on the Right of Peoples to Peace.
Thanksgiving Day community meal
MADISON — First United Methodist Church (FUMC) will sponsor a holiday meal on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 28, at 203 Wisconsin Ave., from 12 noon to 2 p.m. for those who are not be able to partake in a holiday meal. The meal is free and no reservation is required.
