On Sunday, May 5, students from Watertown Catholic, Blessed Sacrament School in Madison, and St. Jerome School in Columbus boarded a bus bound for a five-day trip to Gettysburg, Pa., and Washington, D.C.

Eyes opened to human struggles on mission trip
MADISON — The mission trip is a long-standing tradition, made available only to juniors at Edgewood High School. It is a service immersion experience.
Immersion experience
Part of the time students are involved in direct service. Part of the time students are learning about social justice issues such as poverty, homelessness, hunger, incarceration, racism, and immigration.
Part of the time students pray and reflect on their experiences. But, all of the time students are immersed in environments that open their eyes to the realities faced by so many marginalized people in our country.

But summer is also a time to serve: to be the “light of Christ” in the world and to be “Sent Forth by the Spirit.”
Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish in Madison has students that serve all year long: as ushers, altar servers, cantors, leaders of the Children’s Liturgy of the Word, etc.

Holy Father proclaims the joy of the Gospel
Dear friends,
What a blessing it has been this amazing and eventful week as we’ve enjoyed the visit of our Holy Father, Pope Francis.
I had the privilege to be in Washington, D.C., for the activities of last Wednesday, including of course, the meeting of the Holy Father with the Bishops of the United States.
The loving support of the Holy Father for his bishops and of us for him, is altogether more than refreshing.
Local coverage of papal visit
Editor’s note: Cathy Lins and Marie Lins will be providing coverage of the visit of Pope Francis for the Catholic Herald (print paper, website (www.madisoncatholicherald.org), Facebook, and Twitter), in addition to coverage provided by Catholic News Service.
