Growing in knowledge of faith in the diocese
MADISON — “Being Christian is not the result of an ethical choice or a lofty idea, but the encounter with an event, a person, which gives life a new horizon and a decisive direction.”
We begin by reflecting on these words by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, which define our mission as Christians as being a disciple to Christ and thus our relationship with him gives “direction” to our lives.

“Of all the things that should be beautiful in the sacred liturgy, music is one of the most important ones,” said Abbot Marcel Rooney, OSB, to the attendees at the St. Thérèse Lecture November 20 at the Bishop O’Connor Catholic Center in Madison.

MADISON — Inspired by Pope Francis’ emphasis on charity and social justice, the Diocese of Madison’s Office of Evangelization and Catechesis has initiated several activities.
One is the sponsorship of two courses on Catholic Social Doctrine taught by Dr. Constance Nielsen throughout the year in different locations.
Another is a special event welcoming Dr. Carolyn Woo of Catholic Relief Services (CRS) to be the guest lecturer at this spring’s St. Thérèse Lecture.
Dr. Woo will address the topic “The One-Handed Gospel: You Did It for Me” (taken from the words of Blessed Mother Teresa)” on Friday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m. at the Bishop O’Connor Center, 702 S. High Point Rd.
Dr. Woo assumed the position of CEO and president of CRS in January of 2012. CRS was founded in 1943 by the Catholic bishops of the United States to serve World War II survivors in Europe. Since then, it has expanded in size to reach more than 100 million people in nearly 100 countries on five continents.
Representing CRS, Dr. Woo was featured in Foreign Policy (May/June, 2013) as one of the 500 most powerful people on the planet and one of only 33 in the category of “a force for good.”
Catholics Come Home founder to speak in Madison
MADISON — In his calling for our current Year of Faith, Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed, “Today too, there is a need for stronger ecclesial commitment to new evangelization in order to rediscover the joy of believing and the enthusiasm for communicating the faith.”
The “new evangelization” was a term first coined by Pope Paul VI and more deeply developed by Blessed John Paul the Great. As clarified by Pope Benedict, it refers in a special way to the necessity of “re-proposing” the Gospel to those regions of the world “where the roots of Christianity are deep but who have experienced a serious crisis of faith due to secularization.”
