Last week’s article discussed the need for everyone in the congregation to participate because that is how we allow the liturgy to do its job of praising God and making us more Christ-like.

St. Ambrose Academy presents Singin’ in the Rain
MADISON — Producer Diane Marsland and Director Angela Hineline have earned reputations for making magic with St. Ambrose Academy’s musical productions by drawing greatness out of their student actors — nearly 40 percent of the entire student body — through a strong work ethic and an infectious enthusiasm.
Packed house crowds have roared with laughter and wiped away wistful tears, entirely delighted.
However, this year’s Singin’ in the Rain centers on 1920’s Hollywood stars Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont as silent films give way to “talkies.”
Essential to the musical are Hollywood sets for the footage of a silent film, a “talkie” flop, and a musical rewrite.
Let us sing as we prepare for Jesus’ birth
Years ago, Sister Victricia chose seventh and eighth graders for the Kieler Immaculate Conception grade school choir. Miraculously, I was chosen. At rehearsals, however, whenever I sang, Sister stopped playing the piano and stared at me. My voice was changing. To survive her stares, I began to lip-sync long before I ever heard of it.
A positive thinking friend told me, “Maybe Sister was admiring your singing.” If so, why did she quit staring after I stopped singing? Dad often said that the Louisburg Langes can’t sing. Fr. Ron Lange, my missionary first cousin, agrees.
Perhaps this is a senile illusion, but now I think I can sing a little better at Mass. Because of old age, however, when celebrating Mass I often refrain from singing hymns that I don’t know to conserve my limited energy for parts that I proclaim and for the Gospel reading and homily.‘Singing the Mass’: St. Ambrose lecture
“Singing the Mass: A Master Class” is the topic of a St. Ambrose Faculty Lecture to be given by Aristotle A. Esguerra on Tuesday, March 18, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at St. Mary Pine Bluff Church, followed by an English Sung Mass with Msgr. James Bartylla, vicar general of the Diocese of Madison, presiding.

MADISON — When the Madison Diocesan Choir enters the chapel at the Bishop O’Connor Center on Sunday, Dec. 22, at 4 p.m., it might be the last time the choir presents its Festival of Lessons and Carols in this setting.
The traditional Advent prayer service celebrates the coming of Christ’s birth in Scripture and song. Bishop Robert C. Morlino will preside this year.
“It very well could be our last Lessons and Carols at the O’Connor Center,” said Dr. Patrick Gorman, the choir director. “If all goes as currently planned, I wouldn’t anticipate singing Lessons and Carols there next year.”
