The disorienting quality of real prayer
Editor’s note: Because of its length, this column by Bishop Robert Barron is being published in a two-part series. This is the second part of the series.
Hans Urs von Balthasar observes that the beautiful elects the observer and then sends him on mission to announce what he has seen.
Not many years ago, Rolling Stone magazine asked a number of prominent popular musicians to name the song that first “rocked their world.”
Some of the responses were relatively banal, but the vast majority of them had a Joycean resonance: the respondents knew instinctively the difference between songs (however great) that had merely pleased them and songs that had shaken them out of their complacency and rearranged their vision things.
This kind of aesthetic encounter is the spiritual exercise that Irish Murdoch is speaking of.
Local Church musicians showcase original compositions
MADISON — On Friday, Oct. 2, at 7:30 p.m., church musicians from Madison and the surrounding area will showcase their own compositions in a public recital at St. James Catholic Church, 1204 St. James Ct., Madison.
Local homegrown musical craft will include works for organ, choir, and other instruments. The Wadsworth pipe organ at St. James will be featured. All music presented will be available at the event in a volume published by the Association of Church Musicians, sponsor of the program.
Choir presents final O’Connor Center concert
MADISON — On Friday, May 9, at 7:30 p.m., the Madison Diocesan Choir will present its final concert at the Bishop O’Connor Catholic Pastoral Center, and under the direction of Dr. Patrick Gorman, members will bid farewell to their principal venue for many years with a spring concert to remember, featuring an orchestra, guest soloists, and two seldom-heard, but stunning and inspiring pieces.
Only a year ago, it was in the O’Connor Center chapel that the choir celebrated 40 years of music ministry. Its more than 70 active members from parishes throughout the diocese swelled to over 100, as former members returned. Together, they performed a spring concert as an anniversary choir.
Leaving the center
Since then, the Diocese of Madison announced its decision to leave the center, located at 702 S. High Point Rd., and lease it to a developer. Under the tentative agreement announced last fall, the former seminary will become an apartment complex with up to 150 rental units.
“I think everybody’s sad in their own way, but it seems to be a practical move,” said Gorman, choir director for 22 years in addition to being director of the diocesan Office of Worship.
“I trust that that’s what needs to be done. But as I’ve said before, my favorite place to sing in the diocese always had been St. Raphael Cathedral. It was such a lovely cathedral. I was very sad when that burned, and there’s a similar sadness here in that we have a nice home, it’s convenient, it’s a good acoustic. People like to come here. Good parking. That’s all going to have to change.”

Pastoral ministers support each other through association
MADISON — Pastoral ministers who are part of a parish staff may have any number and variety of responsibilities.
Many of us coordinate outreach to the homebound, visits to people in care facilities, and ministry to the bereaved.
Others are deacons, liturgists, pastoral musicians, social justice coordinators, directors of communications, or have adult faith formation responsibilities.
