With 1.2 million Catholics in Wisconsin, Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki of Milwaukee told hundreds of them gathered in the State Capitol in Madison, “We are definitely a player in the state of Wisconsin, there is no doubt about it.”

In his encyclical Deus Caritas Est (God Is Love), Pope Benedict XVI said, “The Church . . . cannot and should not replace the State. Yet at the same time she cannot and must not remain on the sidelines in the fight for justice. She has to play her part through rational argument and she has to reawaken the spiritual energy without which justice, which always demands sacrifice, cannot prevail and prosper.”
