‘Battle of the Books’ in Waunakee
WAUNAKEE — When a school gym is home to a raucous environment, high energy from students and parents, and spirited competition, one would naturally assume a sporting event is taking place.
During a recent morning at St. John the Baptist School in Waunakee, all of those efforts were not about sports — they were about books.
As a culmination of a year’s worth of reading, more than 70 students in grades three to six took part in the Battle of the Books, based on a national event where students from different schools read books and compete against each other in knowledge contests based on those books.Princeton school plans Golf Benefit
PRINCETON — Plans are underway for St. John Catholic School’s in Princeton’s 18th annual Golf Benefit to be held on Saturday, May 19, at Sondalle’s White Lake Country Club, Montello.
Price is $75 per person as last year in the hopes of increasing participation. Cost includes 18 holes of golf, cart, and dinner. The cost for full members of Sondalle’s White Lake Country Club is $50 per person.‘Catholic Kids for a Cause: Fight Like Zayden’
JEFFERSON — The Catholic community of St. John the Baptist (SJB) School and St. Francis of Assisi Parish recently gathered to participate in a fundraising event for the family of Zayden Gess, parishioners and members of the school community.
Zayden, son of Jenny and Kevin Gess, was born prematurely six months ago with multiple medical challenges along with Down Syndrome. He continues to be cared for at American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison.Talk in Janesville on Carmelite spirituality
JANESVILLE — Fr. Thomas Otanga, OCD, will talk about Carmelite spirituality on Sunday, March 11, at 11 a.m. at St. John Vianney Church, 1250 E. Racine St.
He will discuss the spirituality of such Carmelite saints as St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila, and St. Thérèse of Lisieux.
The Order of Carmelite Discalced Seculars (OCDS) in Janesville is the only one in the Diocese of Madison. OCDS members are men, women, married, and single from all walks of life.

Lenten mission at St. John Vianney will feature Dr. Marcellino D’Ambrosio
JANESVILLE — As we enter into the season of Lent, many Catholics consider how to deepen their spiritual journey and go beyond simply “giving something up.”
To aid parishioners — and Catholics in the Diocese of Madison — St. John Vianney Parish in Janesville has invited Dr. Marcellino D’Ambrosio, better known as “Dr. Italy,” to come and speak for a one-night mission on Thursday, Feb. 22.
Dr. D’Ambrosio is a well-respected Catholic professor and speaker who has had several books on the New York Times best-seller list, hosted multiple TV series on EWTN, and been a frequent guest on a variety of Catholic radio shows, including Catholic Answers and The Catholic Connection.
Fr. John Urban dies
Fr. John Urban, a retired priest of the Diocese of Madison, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017, at the age of 84, at his home in Jefferson.
Lessons and Carols in Montello
MONTELLO — St. John the Baptist Parish in Montello and Good Shepherd Parish in Westfield will present an evening of Lessons and Carols on Wednesday, Dec. 13, at 6:30 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Church in Montello.
The St. John the Baptist and Good Shepherd Choirs will unite to provide the musical presentations. Students from the religious education program at both parishes will also participate.
Houston students thank Janesville students for donations, share stories of hurricane
JANESVILLE — Students and staff at St. John Vianney (SJV) School in Janesville recently got a chance to hear stories of the recent storm damage in the southern U.S. and how their donations helped out other schoolchildren there.
Eleven students from Houston recently came to Janesville to run in the Midwest Invitational Cross Country Meet.
During that time, those students visited the school and shared with SJV students and staff firsthand what it was like in Houston during, and after, Hurricane Harvey.
