Edgewood College hosts Family Science Night
MADISON — Edgewood College will welcome young minds to its annual Family Science Night.
This community event features numerous hands-on science exploration stations where curious people of all ages can dig into science discovery and phenomenon.
There is no charge, and all are invited to attend from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10, in the Sonderegger Science Center, 1000 Edgewood College Dr.
Dorothy Day’s granddaughter to speak at Edgewood College
MADISON — Kate Hennessy, granddaughter of Dorothy Day, will speak at Edgewood College’s 13th annual Aquinas Forum at 10 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 8, in Anderson Auditorium, 1000 Edgewood College Dr.
Hennessy will present the biographical story of her grandmother and her mother, Tamar Hennessy. She will draw from memories, diaries, and family letters as she explores the themes of love, suffering, voluntary poverty, pacifism, and what it means to perform Works of Mercy.
Edgewood hosts panel on women in journalism

With the topic, “The Battle is Never Over: Overcoming Adversity in the News Business,” the panel will be held on Monday, Aug. 28, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. in the Anderson Auditorium at Edgewood College, 1000 Edgewood College Dr.
Andrew Showers ordained transitional deacon at St. Peter’s Basilica
ROME — Andrew Showers, a seminarian from the Diocese of Madison, was one of 30 seminarians from the Pontifical North American College in Rome who were ordained to the transitional diaconate during a celebration of the Eucharist on Thursday, Sept. 29.
Cardinal Seán O’Malley, OFM. Cap., archbishop of Boston, was the ordaining prelate at the Ordination Mass, celebrated at the Altar of the Chair of St. Peter, in the Papal Basilica of St. Peter, in the Vatican.
Advice to students, new and old
Last week I offered some remarks at the matriculation ceremony for Thomas Aquinas College in California. Since I would give the same advice to any Catholic students reentering the school year, I thought I would share my thoughts here.
A few months before I was named bishop, I gave another lecture at Thomas Aquinas College. I was asked to deliver a talk that I thought was going to be a little too heavy. It was late at night, I had flown in from Chicago and driven up the California highway, and I thought, “Oh, this talk is going to bomb.”

Conversation planned on encyclical
MADISON — A conversation on Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’: On Care of Our Common Home and sustainable agriculture in Wisconsin will be held Sunday, Sept. 27, from 1:30 to 6 p.m. in Anderson Auditorium in Predolin Hall at Edgewood College.
Panelists will include environmentalist Calvin DeWitt , Sr. Miriam Brown, Eric Anglada of the New Hope Catholic Worker Farm, and Edgewood economics professor Kevin Biller. The speakers will lead break-out sessions after the panel concludes.
