During the second half of the 20th century, we experienced many positive changes in our society in the United States, including greater respect for minorities and the expansion of opportunities for women, along with advances in technology, communications, and medical care.

Rachel’s Vineyard retreats
MADISON — After her abortion, all Janine* felt was relief. She was unmarried and the pregnancy was unplanned and unwelcome. Janine didn’t want to let her family down, and, after all, wasn’t it just a mass of cells?
Church, not government, commanded to feed hungry
To the editor:
I am writing in response to the letter from John Murphy in the February 9 edition of the Catholic Herald regarding President Obama being called “the food stamp President.”
Mr. Murphy needs to know the command to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and visit the sick was given to the Church, not the government.
Right of conscience not protected in health care act
To the editor:
The Affordable Care Act, funded by half the Medicare budget, offers free condoms, free birth control, and free abortion for all ages. The right of conscience is not protected as it was before the legislation.
Medicare defunding will not be felt until after 2012. The Independent Advisory Board of 15 appointed by our president makes all decisions about who gets what and at what age without input from seniors or politicians. The board is also delegated to defund Medicare by another $200 billion in the next decade.
Making a life-changing detour: Women’s Care Center offers pregnant women a chance to choose life
On January 23, 1973, the United States Supreme Court legalized abortion in the landmark Roe vs. Wade decision.
As we mark the 39th anniversary of that sad decision, many people have been praying and working to give all babies a chance to live. We know that we have to change minds and especially hearts on this issue.
Unconditional parental love
Once I met a woman who had worked for years in fashion and modeling. Unsurprisingly, she was strikingly attractive.
She was accompanied by her teenage daughter who, by contrast, was rather unremarkable to look at, maybe even a plain-Jane.
After spending time with them, I began to sense that the mother, whose life had largely revolved around her appearance, seemed to look down on her daughter, perhaps unconsciously, because of her average appearance.
Political parties differ in their responses to issues
To the editor:
The veiled question at the heart of Professor Kreeft’s talk seems to have been, “Can a Catholic vote for a Democrat?” That question is hardly worth discussing unless self-justification is its purpose.
Ask instead which party is the more likely to feed the poor, house the homeless, and provide for the elderly and disabled. Then ask which party has thrust our nation into its current multitrillion-dollar debt immediately following a presidency marked by balanced budgets and prosperity.
40 Days vigil continues prayers to end abortion
In the twilight hours of October 18, more than 80 people gathered on the sidewalks and terrace grass outside the Planned Parenthood Clinic on Madison’s east side to pray at a candlelight midpoint rally for the 40 Days for Life Vigil.
Bill may keep abortion from health exchanges
MADISON — The State Senate gave its approval to legislation to prohibit health insurance providers that participate in future state exchanges from including elective abortions in their coverage. The proposal, Senate Bill 92, sponsored by State Senator Rich Zipperer (R-Pewaukee) passed the Senate on a 17-16 party line vote.
Film showing on Oct. 23 in Boscobel provides ‘inside look’ at abortion providers
To the editor:
One million dollars a day in taxpayer funding! This is the amount that Planned Parenthood receives from the federal coffers. One million dollars a day! The net worth of this “non-profit” organization is reported to be $9.8 million; its CEO’s salary: $248,819!
It is Wisconsin’s largest abortion chain . . . and it is now under federal investigation. Thanks to a recently released 30-page analysis exposing Planned Parenthood’s misuse of federal funds, failure to report child sex abuse, willful disregard for state laws regulating abortion, and a number of other scandalous activities, the House Committee on Oversight and Investigation is calling for an accounting.
