JANESVILLE — The spire and bell tower of the St. Patrick Church, located at 315 Cherry St., Janesville, is scheduled to be removed on Monday, Nov. 2, weather permitting.
The cornerstone for St. Patrick Church was laid in 1863. The church was dedicated on December 4, 1864.
St. Patrick Church is the oldest Catholic church in Rock County and the oldest church in continuous service in Janesville.
Under its 132-foot spire worships a diverse community in the English, Spanish, and Latin languages with nearly 40 percent of members being Hispanic.
Once removed, the steeple will be placed in the courtyard next to the church until restoration fund-raising goals are met.
Parish leaders are expected to detail plans for the full restoration capital campaign in the coming weeks.
