SINSINAWA — Sister Regina Callahan, OP, died Dec. 5, 2021, at St. Dominic Villa, Hazel Green, Wis. The funeral Mass was held at the Dominican motherhouse, Sinsinawa, Dec. 14, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Regina made her first profession as a Dominican Sister of Sinsinawa Aug. 5, 1955, and her perpetual profession Aug. 5, 1958. She taught for 15 years and served as principal for 17 years and support staff for 22 years. Sr. Regina was a skilled educator who developed the whole curriculum. In response, the students wanted to learn. She had a gift for building community that included teachers, parents and students through her gentle manner. She served in Wisconsin, New York, Illinois and Iowa.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Regina taught at St. Raphael, Madison, 1955-1960, and was principal at Edgewood Campus School, Madison, 1977-1981. She served the Sinsinawa Dominican Congregation as Eastern Province finance officer while living in Hazel Green, 1996-2002, and as support staff at the Motherhouse, Sinsinawa, 2002-2003.
Sister Regina was born April 23, 1928, in Chicago, the daughter of Francis and Helen (Spiro) Callahan. Her parents; a sister, Donna Callahan; and a brother, James Callahan, preceded her in death. She is survived by two sisters, Helen Buck and Dorothy Muscia; nieces; nephews; and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared 66 years of religious life.
