SINSINAWA — Sister Patricia “Pat” Cherry, OP, died Sept. 28, 2021, at St. Dominic Villa, Hazel Green, Wis. Her religious name was Sister Edwina. Natural burial took place Sept. 30 in the Motherhouse Cemetery, Sinsinawa. The funeral Mass was held at the motherhouse Oct. 9.
Sister Pat made her first religious profession as a Dominican Sister of Sinsinawa Aug. 5, 1953, and her perpetual profession Aug. 5, 1957. She taught for 23 years and served as a nurse aide for seven years and a registered nurse for 11 years. Sister Pat ministered in family care for two years and volunteered in a school for five years. She is remembered for her kindness and gentleness and the joy that radiated from her. Sister Pat served in Illinois, the District of Columbia, Minnesota, Maryland, New York, Wisconsin, Iowa and Pennsylvania.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Pat taught at St. Rose, Cuba City, 1975-1976. She ministered as a registered nurse at Divine Savior Hospital, Portage, 1986-1987, and at the Motherhouse, Sinsinawa, 1987-1989.
Sister Pat was born Jan. 9, 1931, in New York, the daughter of David and Helen (Newcombe) Cherry. Her parents; a sister, Mary Boline; and five brothers, Thomas Cherry, James Cherry, John “Jack” Cherry, David Cherry, and William Cherry, preceded her in death. She is survived by a brother, Francis Cherry; nieces; nephews; and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared life for 68 years.
