SINSINAWA, Wis. — Sr. Mary Montgomery, OP, former superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Madison, died October 29, 2019, at St. Dominic Villa, Hazel Green, Wis. Her religious name was Sr. Mary Henry.
The funeral Mass will be held at the Dominican motherhouse, Sinsinawa, November 6, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Mary made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican August 5, 1957, and her perpetual profession August 5, 1960. She taught for 13 years and was principal for four years. While teaching, she also served as director of religious education for two years and adult education coordinator for four years.
Sister Mary served in diocesan education offices for 15 years, as executive director of Sinsinawa Mound for three years, in a diocesan pastoral office for 13 years and spearheaded projects to share the history of Fr. Samuel Mazzuchelli, OP. She served in Minnesota, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Maryland, Wisconsin, and Iowa.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Mary served as superintendent of Catholic schools for the diocese, 1983-1990, and as executive director of Sinsinawa Mound, Sinsinawa, 1990-1993.
Sister Mary was born July 26, 1937, in Chicago, the daughter of Edward and Mary (Gibbs) Montgomery. Her parents and a sister, Elizabeth Muzik, preceded her in death. She is survived by a sister, Helen Carroll; nieces; nephews; and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared 62 years of religious life.
