MILWAUKEE — School Sister of St. Francis Mary Magdalene Stroeder, who lived her religious vocation in education and administration, died on March 9, 2017, at Sacred Heart in Milwaukee. Sister Mary Magdalene was 94 years old.
Sister Mary Magdalene was born on September 27, 1922, in Marysburg, Saskatchewan, Canada. She was received into the School Sisters of St. Francis on June 13, 1944; made her first profession of vows in 1946; and made final (perpetual) vows in 1952.
Sister Mary Magdalene is survived by two sisters, Mary Lavery of Richmond, British Columbia, Canada, and Sally Muench of Muenster, Saskatchewan, Canada; a brother, George Stroeder of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada; many nieces and nephews, friends, and the School Sisters of St. Francis Community with whom she shared her life for 73 years.
In the Diocese of Madison, she taught at St. Mary School, Pine Bluff (1960), and served as principal at St. Charles School, Cassville (1975-1985). At St. Joseph Parish in Baraboo, Sister Mary Magdalene served as program coordinator from 1991-1992 and as parish visitor from 1992-2003.
A wake and Funeral Liturgy were held on March 14, 2017, at St. Joseph Convent, Milwaukee. Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
