SINSINAWA — Sister Mary Jo Schofield, OP, died April 20, 2015, at St. Dominic Villa. Her religious name was Sister Mary Bernardus. The funeral Mass was held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa April 24, 2015, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Mary Jo made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican August 5, 1952, and her final profession August 5, 1955. She taught for 49 years and ministered as a pastoral care person for seven years. Sister Mary Jo served in Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Mary Jo taught at St. Dennis, Madison, 1962-1965, and Queen of Peace, Madison, 1969-1971.
Sister Mary Jo was born August 18, 1932, in Chicago, the daughter of Michael and Nora (O’Malley) Schofield. Her parents; two sisters, Catherine McGarrity and Eileen Brennan; and three brothers, Peter Schofield, John Schofield, and Michael Schofield, preceded her in death. She is survived by a sister, Margaret Dahill-O’Hara; a brother, Bernard Schofield; nieces; nephews; and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared life for 62 years.
