SINSINAWA — Sr. Mary Hemeyer, OP, died Jan. 7, 2019, at St. Dominic Villa. Her religious name was Sister Muritta. The funeral Mass was held at the Dominican motherhouse, Sinsinawa, Jan. 14, 2019, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Mary made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican August 5, 1950, and her perpetual profession August 5, 1953. She taught for 20 years and ministered in various roles as support staff for 30 years. Sister Mary served in Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, South Dakota, and Wyoming.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Mary taught at St. Patrick, Madison, 1958-1961. She served the Sinsinawa Dominican Congregation at the motherhouse, Sinsinawa, as a seamstress, 1969-1971, 1972-1975, and 1982-1984; as a driver, 1984-1986; and as secretary in the Office of Development, 1986-2000.
Sister Mary was born Oct. 14, 1930, in Mitchell, S.D., the daughter of Fredrick and Elizabeth (McAvinney) Hemeyer. Her parents preceded her in death. She is survived by cousins and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared 68 years of Religious life.
