COMAYAGUA, Honduras — A Mass of Christian Burial was held in Comayagua, Honduras, with the bishop of Honduras presiding for Sr. Marilyn Stoppleworth, 94, who died on March 17.
A member of the School Sisters of St. Francis, she served as a missionary teaching children in Central America, Costa Rica, and Honduras for over 54 years.
She was born on March 29, 1923, in Cross Plains, the daughter of Teresa and Albert Stoppleworth. She entered the convent after attending St. Francis Xavier School in Cross Plains.
After professing her vows 75 years ago, she spent five years teaching in intermediate grades in Wisconsin and 16 years teaching at Pius High School in Milwaukee before beginning her missionary work in 1964.
She is survived by three sisters, Bobbie Hilgers, Jeanene Paddock, and Janice Brunner, and a brother, Albert Stoppleworth, Jr. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Mardella Ripp and Rosilind Haak, and a brother, Rodney.
