SINSINAWA, Wis. — Sr. Marielle Schmitt, OP, died January 15, 2019, at St. Dominic Villa. The funeral Mass was held at the Dominican motherhouse, Sinsinawa, January 23, 2019, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Marielle made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican August 5, 1938, and her perpetual profession August 5, 1941. She taught for 34 years and served as librarian for 16 years. Sister Marielle did pastoral care for 10 years. She served in Washington, D.C.; Minnesota; Illinois; New York; Iowa; Missouri; and Wisconsin.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Marielle served as librarian at Edgewood Campus School, Madison, 1979-1989.
Sister Marielle was born July 27, 1918, in Whitewater, Wis., the daughter of Hugo and Roberta (Miller) Schmitt. She attended Wauwatosa Grade School, Wauwatosa, Wis.; St. Bernard Grade School, Milwaukee; St. Mary Grade School, Portage, Wis.; and St. John Cathedral High School, Milwaukee, graduating in 1936. Her parents; a sister, Marion Merkt; and three brothers, Theodore Schmitt, Hugo Schmitt, and Robert Schmitt, preceded her in death. She is survived by nieces, nephews, and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared 80 years of Religious life.
