SINSINAWA — Sr. Marie Cagnoni, OP, died April 22, 2017, at St. Dominic Villa. Her religious name was Sister Bertrandine. The funeral Mass was held at the Dominican motherhouse, Sinsinawa, April 26, 2017, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Marie made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican August 5, 1944, and her final profession August 5, 1947. She ministered in education for 62 years, teaching first grade for 24 years, running Learning Centers for 18, and serving as teacher aide for 20 years. Sister Marie served as vicaress of the motherhouse for four years. She ministered in Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Marie taught in the Learning Center at Blessed Sacrament, 1975-1986; ministered as vicaress of the motherhouse, Sinsinawa, 1986-1990; and served as teacher aide at St. Dennis School, 1990-2010.
Sister Marie was born Oct. 10, 1923, in Rockford, Ill., the daughter of Celso and Erminia (Eruli) Cagnoni. Her parents and a sister, Josephine Goral, preceded her in death. She is survived by a sister, Vivian Borkus; nieces; nephews; and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared life for 72 years.
