SINSINAWA — Sr. Marie Bertrand Wright, OP, died July 5, 2017, at St. Dominic Villa. The funeral Mass was held at the Dominican motherhouse, Sinsinawa, July 11, 2017, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Marie Bertrand made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican Aug. 5, 1947, and her final profession Aug. 5, 1950. She taught high school science for 41 years and served as principal for six years and pastoral minister for 20 years.
Sister Marie Bertrand served in South Dakota, Alabama, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and Alaska. In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Marie Bertrand taught at St. Clara Academy, Sinsinawa, 1967-1969. She served as pastoral minister at the motherhouse, Sinsinawa, 1994-2014.
Sister Marie Bertrand was born May 7, 1923, in St. Louis, Mo., the daughter of John and Eleanor (Leonard) Wright. Her parents; a sister, Florence Gately; and two brothers, John Wright and R. Emmet Wright, preceded her in death. She is survived by a sister, Grace Mayer; her twin brother, Joseph Wright; and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared 70 years of religious life.
