SINSINAWA, Wis. — Sr. Leopold Kaufmann, OP, died May 29, 2018, at St. Dominic Villa. The funeral Mass was held at the Dominican motherhouse, Sinsinawa, June 1, 2018, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Leopold made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican August 5, 1942, and her final profession August 5, 1945. She taught elementary students for 40 years and served as finance officer for 13 years, secretary to the prioress of the congregation for six years, and sacristan for five years. Sister Leopold served in Illinois, New York, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Leopold taught at Edgewood Campus School, Madison, 1973-1978. She served the Sinsinawa Dominican Congregation at the motherhouse, Sinsinawa, as finance officer, 1982-1988; assistant finance officer/medical accountant, 1988-1994; and secretary to the prioress of the congregation, 1994-2000. Sister Leopold ministered as sacristan at the motherhouse, 2001-2006.
Sister Leopold was born December 30, 1922, in Oshkosh, Wis., the daughter of Leopold and Catherine (Freuen) Kaufmann. Her parents; three sisters, Isabella Fessler, Elizabeth Radford, and Sr. Catherine Mary Kaufmann; and two brothers, Anton Kaufmann and Jacob Kaufmann, preceded her in death. She is survived by a brother, Denis Kaufmann; nieces; nephews; and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared 75 years of religious life.
