SINSINAWA — Sr. Janel Halverson died May 3, 2015, at the Dominican Motherhouse, Sinsinawa. The funeral Mass was held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa May 8, 2015, followed by burial of the cremains in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Janel made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican August 5, 1951, and her final profession August 5, 1954. She taught for 42 years and ministered as principal for nine years and librarian for two years. She served in Illinois, New York, Minnesota, Indiana, Wisconsin and California.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Janel taught at Our Lady Queen of Peace, Madison, 1978-1981, and served as librarian at St. Dennis, Madison, 1981-1983.
Sister Janel was born October 20, 1930, in Wisconsin Rapids, the daughter of Oswald and Lucille (Paul) Halverson. Her parents preceded her in death. She is survived by a sister, Jan Liberti; nieces; and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared life for 63 years.
