MADISON — Sr. Jacqueline A. Tierney, OBT, age 85, died on October 16, 2022, in her family home in the care and the company of her sister Fran and religious sister, Sr. Hedwig Rojas, OBT.
She was born October 3, 1937, to John and Frances (Keller) Tierney in The Bronx, N.Y. She attended Sacred Heart Private School and Sacred Heart of Mary Academy in N.Y. She received her Bachelor of Education and did post graduate work at Fordham University in N.Y.
Her Masters in Educational Administration was earned at the University of Wisconsin – Madison.
She entered St. Aloysius Novitiate in Hopewell Junction, N.Y. in 1961, made temporary profession in 1964, and perpetual profession in 1969.
She taught at St. Clare’s School in The Bronx, N.Y. before coming to St. Maria Goretti in Madison, WI, as the 3rd Grade Teacher. She then came back as Principal in 1969. She remained Principal until retiring in 1995.
Sister Jacqueline then became Principal at St. Michael School in Dane, WI in 1998. She retired from Educational Ministry in 2010.
Sister Jacqueline served her community in many ways: several terms on the Provincial Council, General Treasurer, and handled the social security needs for the entire community.
Sister was a member of the Principals Association of the Diocese of Madison and served on its executive board. She also served as Chairperson of the Madison Area Principals.
She was also a member of the Diocesan Pastoral Council, although her active participation had been limited due to health reasons.
In 2012, Sister Jacqueline was awarded a special Papal award: The Medal Pro Ecclesia Et Pontifice. This was from Pope Benedict at the request of Bishop Robert Morlino.
She was preceded in death by her mother (2004) and her father (1953). She is survived by her sister, Frances Joan Tierney.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by The Very Rev. Richard Heilman at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 20, 2022 at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, 5313 Flad Ave., Madison, WI. A visitation will be held from 8:30-11:00 a.m. at the church. A reception will follow the Mass.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests Mass and other spiritual remembrances or donations to the Oblates to the Blessed Trinity c/o Fran Tierney. Interment will take place at St. Denis Cemetery in Hopewell Junction, N.Y.
