SINSINAWA — Sr. Cecilia Carey, OP, died Aug. 12, 2016, at St. Dominic Villa. The funeral Mass was held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa Aug. 16, 2016, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sr. Cecilia taught for 28 years and ministered as pastoral associate for 13 years. She taught English at Edgewood College, Madison, 1955 to 1957 and 1958 to 1963, served as president of Edgewood College, 1967 to 1977, and as prioress of the Sinsinawa Dominican congregation, 1977 to 1986.
Sr. Cecilia made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican Aug. 6, 1940, and her final profession Aug. 6, 1943. She served in Illinois, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and New York, as well as Bolivia.
Sr. Cecilia was born Aug. 17, 1921, in Casselton, N.D., the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Mahon) Carey. She spent part of her childhood in Wausau, Wis. Her parents; a sister, Joyce Simon; and two brothers, Robert Carey and John Carey, preceded her in death. She is survived by a sister, Sr. Mary Lois Carey, OP; a brother, Mark Carey; nieces; nephews; and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared life for 76 years.
