SINSINAWA — Sr. Catherine Lyons, OP, died March 13, 2017, at St. Dominic Villa. Her religious name was Sr. Marie Edmund. The funeral Mass was held at the Dominican motherhouse, Sinsinawa, March 20, 2017, followed by burial of the cremains in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Catherine made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican Aug. 5, 1948, and her final profession Aug. 5, 1951. She taught for 21 years and ministered as principal for 22 years. Sister Catherine served as pastoral minister for one year, as prioress of the motherhouse for four years, as Camp WeHaKee (now WeHaKee Camp for Girls) finance staff for four years, and volunteer for 16 years.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Catherine served as principal at St. Jerome, Columbus, 1988-1992; as prioress of the motherhouse, Sinsinawa, 1992-1996; and as volunteer at St. Rose School, Cuba City, 2000-2001.
Sister Catherine was born Aug. 8, 1928, in Chicago, the daughter of Redmund and Bridget (McNamara) Lyons. She is survived by a sister, Frances Wasowicz, nieces, nephews and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared life for 68 years.
