SINSINAWA, Wis. — Sister Carol Sutter, OP, died May 17, 2018, at St. Dominic Villa. Her religious name was Sister Aurelian. The funeral Mass was held at the Dominican motherhouse, Sinsinawa, May 23, 2018, followed by burial of the cremains in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Carol made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican Aug. 5, 1957, and her final profession Aug. 5, 1960. She taught for 14 years and served as director of religious education for 12 years and another 14 while also running Rite of Initiation of Adults (RCIA) programs. Sister Carol co-directed the Dominican Education Center for three years and served in family care for two years and as support staff for seven years. She served in Illinois, Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Arizona and New Mexico.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Carol served as co-director of education and research for the Dominican Education Center, Sinsinawa, 1971-1974, and as support staff at the motherhouse, Sinsinawa, 2004-2011. She was an elementary tutor for migrant families at Queen of America Mission, Cambria, during the summers of 1968 and 1969; served in family care in Mount Horeb, 2002-2004; and ministered as director of religious education at St. Ignatius Parish, Mount Horeb, and Holy Redeemer Parish, Perry, both 2004.
Sister Carol was born Feb. 21, 1938, in Blue Mounds, Wis., the daughter of Odilo and Kathryn (Esser) Sutter. Her parents and a brother, Ronald Sutter, preceded her in death. She is survived by two sisters, Jean Sutter and Betty Endres; a brother, Richard Sutter; nieces; nephews; and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared 60 years of religious life.
