Faith. Family. Future.
As Our Lady of the Assumption (OLA) Catholic School in Beloit prepares for another year, it is with a focus on serving the whole student — body, mind, and soul.
OLA has faced many pandemic-related challenges over the past 17 months, yet the teachers and staff have remained committed to supporting families and preparing children for a lifetime of service.
The school is offering in-person classes this fall and is pleased to see another year of educating approximately 160 students in a highly competitive Stateline education environment.
Commitment of families
“Throughout all the trials of the past year-plus, we are heartened to see the continued commitment of our families and area congregations. From sending students, to offering financial support and volunteering time, our stakeholders make it clear that a Catholic education is as valued, and as important, as ever,” said Principal Trevor Seivert.
OLA is committed to making this educational experience available to all who seek it, regardless of family financial position. Sharing the blessings of a Catholic education is that important to school leaders. OLA offers tuition assistance, and also provides opportunities for students and parents to earn credit toward tuition.
“My personal philosophy is that if you want a Catholic education for your child, we’ll find a way to make it work. I really believe that here at OLA,” Seivert said.
This school is not just a building or a set of classrooms. Students are part of a community and support each other. It’s common to see older students helping younger kids, even stopping to tie shoelaces in the hall.
“OLA is more like a family than a school,” said Seivert.
The caring, nurturing environment doesn’t mean that the school isn’t also serious about academics. Ninety-two percent of OLA graduates become National Honor Society members in high school. The curriculum is rigorous, and even though the school is small, OLA offers a range of opportunities to help students grow. Beyond core instruction, all ages participate in music, art, technology, and Spanish classes. Extracurricular activities are also available, including athletics, band, and altar service, among others.
Students attend weekly mass. Spiritual growth is at the heart of an OLA education.
Educating the whole person
“We educate the whole person, and teach our children how to be disciples of Christ,” said Seivert.
While OLA kids learn to appreciate the traditions of faith and the Church, they are also prepared for the world with modern technology. Every kindergarten through eighth-grade student receives their own Chromebook, and all classrooms have SMART Boards.
Yet, technology is no stand-in for caring, devoted educators.
“Nothing can replace or replicate the amazing job our teachers do,” Seivert said.
