MADISON — It was a solemn yet joyful evening as Bishop Robert C. Morlino ordained Vincent Brewer and Garrett Kau to the Order of Deacons during a Mass celebrated on Friday, May 25, in the chapel of the Bishop O’Connor Catholic Pastoral Center in Madison.
“All of us are very happy,” said Bishop Morlino. “That happiness comes from the heart, from the fruits of the Holy Spirit. We know that the Holy Spirit hovers over this chapel. He will change you into the person of Jesus Christ, the servant.”
Concelebrants of the Mass included Abbot Marcel Rooney, diocesan priests, and priest guests. Permanent deacons of the diocese were in attendance. Deacon of the Word was Deacon David Johannes, a transitional deacon who will be ordained to the priesthood on June 29 of this year. Fr. Gregory Ihm was master of ceremonies and Msgr. James Bartylla was the elctor.
Readers were Dan Kendall and Denise Brewer. Presenting the Offertory gifts were Larry and Elvira Kau and Mallory and Matthew Pietz. Vesting ministers were Fr. Patrick Wendler for Brewer and Deacon Johannes for Kau.
The St. Raphael Cathedral Choir (at St. Patrick Church) provided music with Dr. Patrick Gorman, director, and Margaret Bomber, music assistant. Glenn Schuster was organist and other musicians provided flute, clarinet, oboe, horn and bassoon music.
Deacons Brewer and Kau were ordained as transitional deacons, meaning that they are expected to be ordained to the priesthood next year.
