One in four people will be affected by a mental health problem at some point in their lives, yet the stigma surrounding mental illness silences many.
The Diocese of Madison has partnered with the Association of Catholic Mental Health Ministers whose goal is to envision a future where the Church plays a vital role in supporting mental health and wellbeing in every community.
Deacon Ed Shoener from Scranton, Pa., is the president of the association.
He will be hosting the Sanctuary Course for Catholics, a free online course beginning on Monday, May 9, in the evening.
This eight-session course is designed to raise awareness and start conversations in local parishes regarding mental health.
The sessions are accompanied by compelling films that feature the stories of Catholics living with mental health challenges, along with the insights of archbishops, theologians, and psychologists.
All are encouraged to learn more, especially people with questions about mental health who want to help, people supporting others with mental health problems, and people living with mental health problems.
More information on registering for this class will follow in the April 28 edition of the Catholic Herald.
