SINSINAWA — Dominican Sister Janet Ewens died August 9, 2010, at St. Dominica Villa, Hazel Green, Wis. The funeral Mass was held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa on August 12, 2010, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Janet made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican August 12, 1924, and her final profession August 12, 1927. She ministered as a teacher for 21 years, a school administrator for 12 years, a school librarian for 11 years, a university librarian for five years, a pastoral associate for five years, as professional staff at a Catholic school for four years, and as a proofreader for the Sinsinawa Dominican Communication Office for 24 years. Sister Janet served in Washington, D.C.; Nebraska; South Dakota; Minnesota; Wisconsin; Illinois; and Montana.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Janet taught at Blessed Sacrament, Madison, 1941-1945, and ministered in the Communication Office at the Motherhouse as a proofreader, 1982-2006.
Sister Janet was born October 19, 1901, in Milwaukee, the daughter of Joseph and Catherine (Porth) Ewens. Her parents; a sister, Elizabeth Ewens; and three brothers, James Ewens, Robert Ewens, and Paul Ewens, preceded her in death. She is survived by nieces and nephews and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared life for 86 years.
