SINSINAWA — Dominican Sister Carol Artery (Amandus) died May 21, 2009, at the Dominican Motherhouse, Sinsinawa. The Mass of Resurrection was held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa May 25, 2009, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Carol was born April 14, 1938, in Chicago. Sister Carol made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican August 5, 1958, and her final profession August 5, 1961. She ministered in education for 48 years, serving four years in elementary; 21 years in secondary, of which 14 were as coprincipal; 23 years with the Dominican Arts Project; and 18 as adjunct professor. She served the Sinsinawa Dominican Congregation as a member of the leadership team for four years and, since 2005, as copromoter of the Arts and Cultural Heritage Office. A skilled musician, choir director, and liturgist, she served in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Louisiana.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Carol taught at Queen of Peace, Madison, 1960-1962, and as an adjunct professor at Edgewood College for 18 summers. She ministered as the copromoter of the Arts and Cultural Heritage Office for the Sinsinawa Dominican Congregation, 2005-2009.
