DICKEYVILLE — A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Oct. 30, at 11 a.m. at Holy Ghost Church in Dickeyville for Msgr. Elmer J. Dietzel, a pastor emeritus of the Diocese of Madison, who died on Tuesday, Oct. 27, in Madison.
Bishop Robert C. Morlino will be the main celebrant of the Mass with Fr. Bernard E. Rott as homilist.
Visitation will be at St. John the Baptist Parish, Waunakee, on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 3 to 7 p.m. and on Friday, Oct. 30, at Holy Ghost Parish, Dickeyville, from 9 a.m. until the time of the Mass.
Burial will take place immediately after the Mass in the church cemetery. Following interment, lunch will be served in the parish hall.
Monsignor Dietzel, 82, was born March 30, 1927, in Dickeyville to Alphonse and Myra Dietzel. He attended Holy Ghost Grade School, Dickeyville, and Salvatorian Seminary High School, St. Nazianz. His collegiate studies were at Salvatorian Seminary, St. Nazianz, and St. Francis Major Seminary, Milwaukee, where he studied both philosophy and theology.
He was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Madison on May 26, 1951, by Bishop William P. O’Connor. On August 16, 2000, he received his Prelate of Honor as a Monsignor.
Monsignor Dietzel served as associate pastor at St. Bernard Parish, Madison; St. Clement Parish, Lancaster; and St. Henry Parish, Watertown. He served as pastor at St. John, Patch Grove, with the Mission of St. Lawrence, Mt. Hope; Immaculate Conception, Kieler; St. Matthew, Shullsburg; Holy Redeemer, Madison; St. John the Baptist, Waunakee; and St. Rose of Lima, Brodhead, with the Mission of St. Patrick, Albany. He retired June 12, 2002.
