SINSINAWA — Dominican Sister Regis Howden, OP, died June 9, 2010, at St. Dominic Villa, Sinsinawa. The funeral Mass was held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa June 14, 2010, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Regis made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican Aug. 5, 1939, and her final profession Aug. 5, 1942. She ministered as a librarian for 57 years, with 14 of those years also serving as a teacher. Sister Regis served in Montana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Oklahoma and Iowa.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Regis ministered as the librarian at Edgewood High, Madison, 1970-1996. She lived in community in Madison; and at the Motherhouse and St. Dominic Villa, both Sinsinawa.
Sister Regis was born Feb. 23, 1913, in Richmond, Ill., the daughter of Frank and Clara (Bingham) Howden. Her parents; four sisters, Helen King, Mary Patricia Howden, Teresa Conway, and Lucy Howden; and three brothers, George Howden, Hugh Howden, and Francis Howden, preceded her in death. She is survived by nieces, nephews, and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared life for 70 years.
