SINSINAWA — Sr. Mary Therese Janke (Marie Carmel) died July 26, 2009, at St. Dominic Villa. The Mass of Resurrection was held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa July 30, 2009, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Mary Therese was born January 9, 1918, in Salem, S.D. She made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican August 5, 1936, and her final profession August 5, 1939. She was a teacher for 35 years and principal for 13 years. She served as a missioner and pastoral person, office staff, and the director of religious education. Sister Mary Therese volunteered at parishes; schools; and the Dominican Motherhouse, Sinsinawa, where she served as a pharmacy clerk and switchboard operator. She served in South Carolina, Illinois, Wisconsin, Wyoming, California, Colorado, Texas, Florida, Arizona, New Mexico, and Louisiana, as well as Cochabamba, Bolivia.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Mary Therese taught at St. Mary, Portage, 1941-1945, and volunteered at the Motherhouse, 1995-2004.
