ADRIAN, Mich. — Sr. Maureen Lathers, formerly known as Marilyn Elizabeth Lathers, died on December 24, 2008, at Marilyn Anderson Hospice Center in Madison, Wisconsin. She was 74 years of age and in the 52nd year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.
Sister Maureen was born in Madison to William and Gladys (Walsh) Lathers. She graduated from Edgewood High School in Madison and received a Bachelor of Philosophy Degree in English from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, Mich., and a Master of Science Degree in Special Education from Wisconsin State University in Whitewater.
She spent 19 years ministering in education and was an occupational therapist for 14 years. She ministered for five years in Wisconsin: from 1974-77 she was an occupational therapist with Therapy Associates in Mequon and from 1978-80 she was a principal/teacher with Cooperative Educational School Agency #14 in Fennimore. Many of her last years were spent at Badger Prairie Health Center in Verona.
Sister Maureen is survived by a brother, Michael Lathers, of Eastport, Mich., and two sisters, Sally O’Malley of Chicago, Ill., and Ellie Beilmann of Northfield, Ill.
The funeral liturgy was offered at St. Maria Goretti Church in Madison on December 30. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery in Madison. Memorial gifts may be made to Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 E. Siena Heights Dr., Adrian, MI, 49221.
