SINSINAWA — Dominican Sister Janice Matthews (Stephania) died October 23 at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, Mission Hills, Calif. The Mass of Resurrection was held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa October 30, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Janice was born June 27, 1937, in Peoria, Ill. Sister Janice made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican August 5, 1957, and her final profession August 5, 1960. Her ministry spanned 50 years as an elementary teacher, director of religious education, and hospital chaplain. She served in Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Texas, Colorado, and California.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Janice served as the director of planning and research for the Dominican Education Center, visiting nearby parishes and helping them to set up religious education programs and offering religious education in-service for teachers of religious education from 1971 to 1974.
