SINSINAWA — Dominican Sister Matthias Michels died June 16, 2007, at St. Dominic Villa. The Mass of Resurrection was held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa June 19, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Matthias was born February 24, 1912, in Eau Claire. Sister Matthias made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican March 8, 1936, and her final profession August 5, 1939. She taught art in junior and senior high schools for 16 years; at Rosary College (now Dominican University) in River Forest, Ill.; and at Edgewood College, Madison. Sister Matthias studied and was later the administrator at Villa Schifanoia, Florence, Italy. She served in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, and Iowa, as well as Italy.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Matthias taught at Edgewood Campus School, Madison, 1936. She taught art and was the dean of students at Edgewood College, Madison, 1961-1971. Sister Matthias ministered at the Motherhouse, Sinsinawa, as director of study, 1971-1978; assistant to the southwest province secretary, 1978-1984; and in adult education, 1984-1996.
