SINSINAWA — Dominican Sister Ellen Claire Miller, OP (Joseph Mary), died Jan. 28, 2010, at Sinsinawa Mound. The funeral Mass was held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa Feb. 1, 2010, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Ellen Claire made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican Aug. 5, 1938, and her final profession Aug. 5, 1941. She taught elementary school for 24 years and college for 26 years and served as a principal for six years. Her other ministries included pastoral ministry and director of religious education for five years, gerontological consultant for two years and counseling for 16 years. She served in Wisconsin, the District of Columbia, Minnesota, Illinois and California.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Ellen Claire taught at Blessed Sacrament, Madison, 1942-1950, and Edgewood Campus and Edgewood College, Madison, 1955-1958.
Sister Ellen Claire was born Dec. 12, 1918, in Chicago, the daughter of George and Margaret (Morrissey) Miller. Her parents and one brother, Joseph Miller, preceded her in death. She is survived by a nephew and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared life for 71 years.
