SINSINAWA — Dominican Sister Joan Schmid (Barthélemy) died November 6, 2007, at the Dominican Motherhouse, Sinsinawa. The Mass of Resurrection was held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa November 10, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Joan was born February 7, 1932, in Minneapolis, Minn. Sister Joan made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican August 5, 1960, and her final profession August 5, 1965. Her ministry spanned 47 years in elementary and secondary education, development, ecumenical and pastoral ministries, grant writing/research, and secretary of the Sinsinawa Dominican Congregation. She served in Wisconsin, Illinois, South Dakota, and Minnesota.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Joan taught at Edgewood High School, Madison, 1972-1978, and at Edgewood College, Madison, 1978-1981 and 1983-1984. She served as the secretary of the Congregation, Sinsinawa, 1994-1995.
