SINSINAWA — Sister Frances Cogan, OP (Louis Mary), died April 7, 2011, at St. Dominic Villa, Hazel Green. The funeral Mass was held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa April 13, 2011, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Frances made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican Aug. 5, 1938, and her final profession Aug. 5, 1941. She taught music for 27 years and the intermediate grades for 15 years. Sister Frances ministered as support staff for nine years and volunteered for two years. She served in Illinois, Nebraska, the District of Columbia, Wisconsin, Wyoming, Iowa, New Jersey and New York.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Frances taught at St. Raphael, Madison, 1952-1953; St. Mary, Portage, 1953-1954; and Blessed Sacrament, Madison, 1980-1983. She ministered as support staff for the Sinsinawa Dominican Development Office, Sinsinawa, 1983-1986.
Sister Frances was born Feb. 16, 1919, in Omaha, Neb., the daughter of John and Margaret (Schaffer) Cogan. Her parents; four sisters, Helen McAllister, Margaret Doyle, Alyce Gilmartin, and Mary Kreidler; and two brothers, John Cogan and Edward Cogan, preceded her in death. She is survived by nieces, nephews, and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared life for 72 years.
