SINSINAWA — Sr. Anne Marie Mongoven, OP, died July 29, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque, Iowa. Her religious name was Sr. Thomas a’ Becket. The funeral Mass was held at the Dominican motherhouse, Sinsinawa, August 4, 2017, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Anne Marie made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican Aug. 5, 1947, and her final profession Aug. 5, 1950.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Anne Marie taught at St. Patrick, Madison, 1950-1953, and Edgewood High School, Madison, 1966-1968. She served as associate director of the Diocese of Madison Office of Religious Education, 1968-1973, and taught at Edgewood College, Madison, 1973-1974. She acted as consultant to Bishop Cletus F. O’Donnell in the analysis of drafts of the writing of a bishops’ document entitled “Basic Teaching of Catholic Religious Education” (1973). This led to her appointment to the National Catechetical Directory committee. Sister Anne Marie continued to write while living in Madison, 2005-2010, and at the motherhouse, Sinsinawa, 2010 until the time of her death.
Sister Anne Marie was born Dec. 21, 1927, in Chicago, the daughter of Thomas and Mary (O’Connor) Mongoven. Her parents; a sister, Sally Jo McNulty; and three brothers, Terence Mongoven, John Mongoven, and Thomas Mongoven, preceded her in death. She is survived by nieces, nephews, and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared 70 years of religious life.
