SINSINAWA — Sr. Marie Janet Meis, OP, died Dec. 25, 2019, at St. Dominic Villa, Hazel Green, Wis.
The funeral Mass was held at the Dominican motherhouse, Sinsinawa, on December 31, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.
Sister Marie Janet made her first Religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican August. 5, 1945, and her perpetual profession August. 5, 1948. She taught for 30 years and was principal for 13 years. Sr. Marie Janet worked in educational and support roles for the Sinsinawa Dominican congregation for 15 years. She served in Illinois, Wisconsin, Nebraska, California, and Colorado.
In the Diocese of Madison, Sister Marie Janet taught at St. Mary, Portage, 1951-1960, and served the Sinsinawa Dominican congregation as co-director of the Dominican Education Center, Sinsinawa, 1983-1986, and secretary for and assistant to the Western Province team, 1992-2002 and 2002-2004, respectively.
Sister Marie Janet was born March 12, 1925, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Margaret (Unthank) Meis. Her parents, five sisters, and a brother, preceded her in death. She is survived by nieces, nephews, and her Dominican Sisters with whom she shared 74 years of Religious life.
