Promoting unity in the Church
Dear Mr. Wondrash, I write to urge you to do what you can as editor of the Catholic Herald to promote unity in the Catholic Church in our diocese.
In recent weeks, when reading the editorial page of the Catholic Herald, I feel accusations coming through the letters people have submitted.
I give Catholics who voted for Trump or for Biden the benefit of the doubt that they did not vote for abortion rights and that they felt they had (grave) reasons consistent with their faith to vote for the presidential candidate they did.
Whether people voted for Trump or Biden, it looks like Biden will be our next president, and we, as Catholics, need to be prepared to work together to do important work.
We need to be ready as a Church to work with Biden on issues such as immigration, aid to refugees and the poor, climate change, racial justice/equity, and the pandemic.
And we need to be prepared to appeal to him, as well as to pursue various other avenues, to support the rights of the unborn.
The Church does not represent a political party.
Given that about one fifth of the U.S. adult population is Catholic, imagine what we can do if we unite and work on the issues, which means working not just to change laws but also to change hearts. Let us begin with humble, loving hearts.
